Bike Tour Difficulty

Virginia is a beautiful state and has a wide array of terrains, from the flat coastal areas to the mountains.

The terrain for this years routes will be varied, depending on the day.  The North-West region of the state, while not as challenging as last year, will offer beauty through rolling terrain and memorable views and scenery.  Most days there will be short and long options for you to choose.  We will maintain an average length of 40-60 miles per day and will have at least one century day.

Preparation will help you get ready and enjoy the tour more.  Please visit our training page for more details on how to prepare properly.

The difficulty rating level is a 6 for the 2012 Bike Virginia Tour and is based on general route development. The difficulty scale is from 1 -10, 10 being  the most difficult.

Several factors are considered when deciding how to rate the rides, however two of the most important are Climbing and Distance.
1. Climbing (the more climbing there is the more difficult the route will be)
2. Distance (longer days are generally more difficult because you are on your bike longer.  Distance does not necessarily mean there is more climbing.  For example, a ride that is 100 miles and is flat can be the same difficulty rating as a ride that is 60 miles but includes a lot of climbing).

As we get closer to the event and make final route confirmations, we will rate each day’s ride and post it on the Route Page.

Be sure to take advantage of the training plan specially designed for this year’s tour so you can make the most of the experience.
