Abingdon and Kingsport: Popular Cycling Destination

Bike Virginia’s annual riding event moves around the state each year highlighting the region’s best bike routes. In 2015 the bike tour is visiting the Abingdon and Kingsport areas for 6 days of amazing cycling. The region offers beautiful rural roads that explore both mountains and valleys. We are delighted to be returning to the region for the first time in 8 years.

2008 Event Was Sold Out

The last time the multi-day Bike Virginia Tour rode in the region was in 2008. That year we had a sell out event, over 2,000 riders and volunteers enjoyed the Crooked Road event. They came for the beauty, history, and warm hospitality.

We camped at high schools in Abingdon, Kingsport, and Bristol, rode to Holston River Dam, visited White’s Mill and had tons of wonderful sunny miles. During the 2008 Crooked Road Tour riders visited the beautiful highlands that year with an eye tuned to the rich music history of the region. A lot of great memories were made of interesting places. Here’s what some of the Bike Virginia rider reviews were from our participant survey:

“The scenery was unbelievable. The roads we traveled on were just wonderful. The ride was so scenic and well planned”

“The variety in the routes – to include the VA Creeper mountain bike option. Seemed like excellent route planning to keep the routes from being too challenging in the mountainous terrain. I think the level of difficulty was perfect!”

“Great ride; great support team; fabulous roads and routes. You all really have your act together. I am most impressed and will return. Jim in Louisville”

“The scenic view on the rides were amazing! The climbs and coasting were equally spaced out! Excellent choices of historic sites!” White's Mill12291 White's Mill Road, Abingdon, VA

Our planning teams have really enjoyed returning to the area and know you will love the bike routes that people found so enjoyable in 2008.

New and Improved Features

Since the 2008 tours the Bike Virginia tour has evolved in ways that enhance the rider experience. While we keep the core value of the event in place with great riding and support services, other aspects of the event have changed to make the vacation even better. Now participants enjoy a variety of rider suggested improvements:

  • Camping in park-like settings versus high schools, this let’s you have on site entertainment including a beer/wine garden for relaxing enjoyment.
  • Dining with more food choices and more control over when you eat. Instead of big catered meals with school-quality food, we have a team of expert food vendors that will take care of your dining desires.
  • Riding loop routes. Every day at the 2015 event you can enjoy a loop bike route that begins and ends at headquarters. The new format let’s you have more choices for riding. Feel like having a short day? That’s fine, pick one of our light routes, or even take a day off. The event will not leave you behind. Camp moves include moving your car too!
  • Finishing at camp 2. Now we end our event at camp 2, no need to move back to camp 1. Wednesday will be a leisurely or long ride of your choice.  Then eat a satisfying lunch before you hit the road at your selected time.
