Get ready Bike Virginians to meet one of the greatest riders of all time!

George Hincapie, one of the most highly recognized cyclists in the world, will join the Bike Virginia Tour as a special guest for a portion of The Highlands Expedition which is scheduled over 6 days, June 26–July 1.  George’s memorable accomplishments include:

Tour de France, 17 times 

Won Three US National Road Race Championships

Ronde van Vlaanderen, a record 17 races

Finished second at the grueling Paris-Roubaiz, the best ever for any American

During his 19 year professional cycling career, George was regarded as the premier American classics rider of his generation. And while he’s participated in—and won—numerous cycling events all over the world, he is probably best known for his role as an outstanding teammate and leader.

“We feel very privileged to have Mr. Hincapie join us at this year’s Tour, and I know our riders will enjoy talking with him about his experiences,” said Dr. Kim Perry, Executive Director.

Our special guest will be joining one of our socials to meet and greet the Tour’s registered riders the evening of Saturday, June 27 and will then ride with the Tour’s cyclists on Sunday, June 28. Riders that want to meet Mr. Hincapie can sign up for the 3-day weekend or the entire 6-day tour.

The 2015 Tour, which marks the 28th year of the event, will take place in the beautiful Highlands region of Virginia and neighboring Tennessee. The Tour has a limited registration cap of 1,600 cyclists. Riders of of all skills and abilities can participate for up to six days of touring in and around beautiful and historic communities. The first headquarters and camp location will be located in scenic Abingdon, Virginia, and the second campsite will be near the North Carolina border in Kingsport, Tennessee. Come join the adventure for days of breathtaking scenery, camaraderie and fun.

Each day, riders have a choice of routes varying in difficulty, with rides available for every skill level. The campsites are a festive and happening place, with numerous food trucks to please every palate, live music each night, shuttles to nearby shopping, activities and historic sites, and more.

Registrants will enjoy:

  • Social activities each night and on Saturday a special opportunity to meet and greet George Hincapie!
  • Riding on fully supported routes with fully stocked Comfort Stations. Mr. Hincapie will be riding Sunday on a selected route.
  • Commemorative T-shirt or Jersey (for registrations before April 1).
  • Camping, Showers and Restrooms, and Live Entertainment.
  • Meal vouchers for specific days.
  • Printed tour book, map and GPS files to complement easy-to-follow signed routes.
