The Bike Virginia Tour is a program of the non-profit Bike Virginia. We work to improve biking across the state.
We conduct multiple educational programs, awareness campaigns, and projects each year. That work focuses on fourĀ things: safety education for riding, improving infrastructure, inspiring changes, getting people on bikes.
Our Bike Virginia Tour also has tremendous economic impact on host communities. The tour helps support local economies in rural areas with over $2.8 million in spending and ripple effect.
Here’s what is in store for 2012:
1. In 2012 as part of the Bike Virginia Tour we will offer our Sunrise Grant Program, awarding up to $5,000 for biking initiatives in the host communities.
2. All riders in the BVT will get a quick Virginia laws orientation during registration. Riders also have a chance to participate in Bike Smart, a 3-part knowledge program that helps improve on-the-bike-safety. Look for Bike Smart at registration and then again at 3 of the rest stops during the tour. Riders will be able to earn a small gift for completing the program.
3. Awareness Campaigns- We partner to offer multipleĀ awareness campaigns in Virginia. Our share the road campaign is a year long program to improve roadway attitudes and behavior. Transit bus advertisements run in major metropolitan areas to support this project. We run two month long campaigns- Distracted Driving in April, and Bike Month in May. in June we conduct a major awareness campaign around our BVT event, spreading information about sharing the road in our host towns. Our fall wraps up with Bicycle and Pedestrian Awareness Week.
