In June 2015 at the Bike Virginia Tour we will bike on the lovely roads near Abingdon, Bristol, Kingsport and many surrounding rural communities. After riding you will get a chance to explore our host towns of Abingdon, Bristol, and Kingsport. While in the area you might want to take a trip to the town of Abingdon to the Barter Theatre for an evening. It’s one of the region’s most popular destinations not just because of the great shows, but quite possibly due to the lure of it’s rich history and interesting beginning.

How the Theatre Got It’s Name

“Barter Theatre opened its doors, proclaiming with vegetables you cannot sell, you can buy a good laugh. The price of admission was 40 cents or equivalent amount of produce. Four out of five Depression-era theatre-goers paid their way with vegetables, dairy products and livestock.”

Even still, the theatre continues the tradition as it holds one performance a year that allows food-bank donations to be exchanged for admission.

The Theatre was started on June 10, 1933.  During our visit ,the company will be celebrating 81 years in business .  Details on 2015 summer shows will be available in early 2015.

The Bike Virginia Tour is so much more than a bike ride. Spin across the countryside and then spend your evenings relaxing in some of Virginia’s historic communities. We offer opportunities to suit your style, stay around camp, or head out on one of our off-site trips. Details about the 2015 tour are being finalized.
