Emergency Weather Plan For Camp and Ride

Emergency Weather Plan For Camp and Ride

Emergency Weather Plan For Camp and Ride 150 150 BIKE VIRGINIA
The forecast is looking good for Bike Virginia 2013. We have a chance of rain each day, but not an overwhelming rain event at this time. Temperatures will likely be between 60 at night and mid 80s to 90 during the day. There of course is always a chance of Thunderstorms in Virginia during the summer.
Pack a rain jacket and light insulation layer for cool mornings. Be sure to bring sunscreen too. Overcast conditions can still result in sunburn.
Here are the Emergency Plan Details
While Riding:
  • If bad weather hits while you are riding, seek shelter at the nearest building. Wait for the storm to pass before resuming your ride.
  • Here are some tips on how to protect yourself in a Thunderstorm.
At the First location in Glen Maury Park:
  • There is high ground for camping.
  • The emergency plan is for riders to use their cars as storm shelter in the case of thunderstorm. There are many large pavilions available for shelter from rain, but this is not advised in lightening. Cars are the safest location at this site in case of thunderstorm.
  • While Tornados are not common in Virginia, here is information on what to do in a Tornado
At the Second location in Botetourt Recreation Park:
  • The camping area is on an elevated field
  • The emergency plan includes access to a large indoor garage in case of Thunderstorm. There will be several large tents on site for dining, yoga, etc, that will be good rain shelters. Also, some riders will have their cars at this location for additional shelter.

If you are familiar with Virginia weather, you probably know that a chance of thunderstorms is always present in the summer. We are hopeful that they hold off for the week, but realistically understand that this could affect camp, usually for short periods of time. Thankfully the overcast conditions can make for nice riding, helping keep the daytime temperatures down.
