Virginia Bids on International Cycling Event 150 150 BIKE VIRGINIA

Virginia is home to one international cycling event, The Bike Virginia Tour, but now the state is setting it’s sights on a prestigious racing event, the 2015 UCI International Road Championships.

Richmond Virginia’s Mayor Dwight Jones just announced the city’s bid to hosting the event. In a recent press conference Jones recanted a rich history of cycling in Richmond and Virginia. This announcement reinforces his commitment to cycling for both the city and the state. Jones commissioned a commission in 2010 to explore ways to make Richmond more bike friendly.

Over 25 years have passed since the UCI Championship event was held in the US and the cycling community thinks it is time that cycling returned to the states. “Richmond would be the first US city to host the event in the new media era,” Jones said. The event could infuse US cycling with new energy as well as generate tremendous tourism for the region.

Creating greater visibility for cycling can also help serve to inspire young and old alike to participate in cycling in a time when active lifestyles are greatly needed.
